I was reading a brief in today's paper about a 12-year old boy in Calabasas who was beat up by his classmates just for being a redhead. Yeah, apparently there was a Facebook note announcing last Friday as "Kick a Ginger Day". The brief stated this posting may have been inspired by a "South Park" e

I was just getting ready to order my mascara online and thought I'd pass on a great website to buy makeup, if you are a redhead. I know my audience is rather small, as redheads only make up about 2% of the population. And apparently our numbers are dwindling. I'm not sure why, but probably becaus

A couple of weeks ago, Jake broke his arm. It happened on his 6th birthday. I feel terrible for him. He was playing on a backyard playset when he decided to "soar over the grass". His words, not mine. Needless to say, that didn't work out so well for him. So we are now more than two weeks i

What a great story!!! I am so sorry to hear about his arm. That definately puts a damper on things. I broke my wrist when I was a kid during a soccer game. We all get a few bumps, bruises and breaks once in a while. Feel better Jake!

Last week I officially started back to school. While it's been a bit hectic, I am enjoying it. I am getting my special education credential. In my previous life before motherhood I worked at a state run facility for the developmentally disabled, so special education it not a stretch. I am exc

I LOVED your story. Your son is so sweet and thoughtful. My daughter loves that book and it looks like it had quite an impact on your son:)

Special education is such a rewarding field. I just recently finished my first year as an intern special ed. teacher. However, I am currently unemployed. Good luck to you! Where are you going to school?

I love "The Kissing Hand"! My kids are 8 and 11 and they still ask for kissing hands every night at bedtime.

Jake started first grade last Monday and it was a tough transition. By Wednesday morning I was alerted by his teacher, Ms. Thompson, that Jake some how managed to get lost at lunchtime on Tuesday and had to be returned to the classroom by one of the lunch ladies. He did not tell me this story. F

My daughter had some bumps in 1st grade too but mostly because she was teased by other 1st graders for being only 5 1/2. Kids can be so hard on one another when really everyone is just trying to fit in and find their "place" in it all.

This brought back so many memories of when my son went from the protective isolation of kindergarten to being with the big kids in first grade. At our school they keep the lower el and upper el (4th to 6th graders) pretty separate, so it was the same

When I was somewhere between ages 10-12, my parents gave me the chore of bringing the trash cans back in after the trash man had come. However, our driveway was basically a hill, and back then there were no wheels on the cans. So, I had to drag them back up this hill, all the while making a ho

I know what you mean Staci. Our parents impart so much knowledge to us and sometimes, we don't realize or appreciate it until we're much older. My dad is 78 and I often hope I can be as wise as him someday.

Does anyone besides me feel that they are almost always in need of repeating themselves to their children? Anyone start their sentences off (or at least think to themselves) with something like, "Why must I always say something at least twice to you before??" Lately I have noticed I need to r

Try making a list of 2-3 things to do before leaving the house (use pictures/clip art and words if necessary). Reward with a small treat or sticker if done. It will keep them on track and focused, and practices reading skills.

This past Friday was my tenth year wedding anniversary. Mark and I are not the type that really celebrate events. My in-law's opinion on special events is that it is silly to just be nice to each other on special occasions, such as anniversaries. Be nice all year long. So typically we don't g

That is awesome! Congratulations on 10 years. We hit 10 years last August & I never thought to look up the significance of that marital benchmark. I don't get the center cinnamon roll but my hubby always gives me the last bite:) Simple pleasures.

Austin is our 6 year old yellow Labrador Retriever. I know the whole how wonderful your yellow Lab is thing has been done before (i.e. Marley and Me) but I just love my dog. I grew up without any pets. My mom was not interested in them, so no pets (though I did have a couple of hamsters and a cat

A couple of weeks ago I took Jake to storytime at the Norco library. At that time the librarian announced that the Norco library would be participating in the 39th Annual Horseweek Parade and anyone who wanted to be in the parade should fill out some paperwork and submit it to the librarian. Jake

About three Saturdays ago Jake and I went to the Norco library. We were checking out our books and movies when he began to inch behind the checkout desk. I asked him what he was doing and he said, "I want to be a library helper". The librarian and I both told him he had to wait until he was a lit

Jake is in kindergarten. He is in Mrs. Tanny's class. Mrs. Tanny is the Clara Barton Elementary school teacher of the year. Woo hoo! We as a family think she is great.

A few days ago at the dinner table Jake asked me out of the blue, "Mom, does Mrs. Tanny rule, is she awesome or

Yesterday I woke up at 5:40 with a terrible bout of nausea. By 7am I was sticking my head in the toilet, pulling my own hair back. I had a case of food poisoning. Also at 7am, my husband had just left for work and Jake had just woke up. At approximately 7:15am I was again hugging my toilet when

For those of you who don't know me, I am Irish. I grew up with a mother who anticipates St. Patrick's Day the way most of us anticipate Christmas morning. She just loves celebrating her Irish heritage. With this in mind, I had the idea for Jake and I to make a leprechaun trap. I thought it would
