Bringing up baby is easier said than done — which is precisely the problem for so many of us.
New parents, particularly first-timers, are inundated with advice and opinions from family members, friends, co-workers, checkout clerks, postal carriers and well-meaning strangers on the street. And that’s just about the issue of cloth diapers vs. disposables.
Because most of us are too busy to do the research on our own, we dutifully follow these leads, sometimes to fruition but often to frustration. There has to be a better way, we think, but where can we find it?
Right here.
Elsewhere in these pages you’ll find the results of the first Parents’ Choice Awards sponsored by sbparent.com, N.E.W. (Network of Enterprising Women) and the Beacon.
Rachael Steidl of sbparent.com came up with the idea for an awards program that actually meant something to those folks who need it most: You. Or people just like you, but newer at it.
Family-friendly businesses and services — reliable and consistent family-friendly business and services — are always in high demand, but sometimes they’re just not that obvious.
As the area’s only trusted news and information source for South Coast families, we knew our very loyal and vocal readers would leap at the chance to share their years of knowledge with the larger community — even if it meant revealing family secrets about the best this or that.
We think you’ll find our listings quite useful and complete, and we trust you’ll visit the winners — as well as the honorable mentions — to reward them for making our lives easier.
In the meantime, if we’ve missed something, do let us know. There’s always next year.
The South Coast Beacon

When one person gives advice, you can take it or leave it. But when hundreds of people chime in on the best places to spend your time, and your money … well, it just makes sense to perk up your ears.
